Intuit's Turbotax Provides Expert Tax Advice And Filing Tips For Sweeping New Tax Laws
SAN DIEGO, Calif. - December 01, 1997 - Before you know it, it'll be that time again. Tax time. The 1997 tax season arrives with extensive changes to federal tax law, and to help its customers take advantage of many new tax saving opportunities, Intuit (NASDAQ: INTU) today announced Turbotax and MacInTax for 1997, America best-selling personal tax preparation software. Changes in tax laws have created over $150 billion in estimated tax reductions, making this year truly the time to use TurboTax to claim your fair share. With this year enhancements, TurboTax and MacInTax are America most complete way to prepare, file and plan taxes at a value no other tax software solution can match.

Over one hundred tax experts pored over the new tax laws and sank their knowledge into creating the new TurboTax and MacInTax. So, whether it capital gains, education expenses, family credits or more, TurboTax and MacInTax come ready and able to help you maximize your tax savings.

"Taxpayers are being confronted with the most sweeping and complex changes in tax laws since 1986, making the use of tax software like TurboTax and MacInTax more important now than it ever has been," said Scott Cook, Intuit Chairman. "With the 1997 versions of TurboTax and MacInTax, we listened to what our customers wanted out of their tax software and gave it to them. The result is software that sets new standards for personalized tax preparation, Web connectivity, and truly seamless electronic filing."

TurboTax continues its leadership role in personal tax software with this year major enhancements:

  • Tax Report-- helps taxpayers develop a plan of action to save on taxes throughout the year. At the end of the final review process, Tax Report displays money saving tips that are specific to the user situation. Tax Report illustrates potential savings in dollar amounts by applying these tips to the customer current return. The Tax Report can then be printed and used as a plan for tax savings throughout the year.
  • New Integrated Electronic Filing Solutions-- electronic filing is now a part of the EasyStep Interview process. Since this feature is built right into EasyStep Interview, users won't be confused by screens which look different from the rest of the program. Once customers finish preparing their taxes, TurboTax will guide users quickly and easily through electronic filing in minutes. Users can also check the status of their return with the IRS without leaving TurboTax. Intuit transmits all returns directly to the IRS through its own secure servers using 128-bit SSL encryption to ensure the security of its customers' communications.
  • Web-enabled environment-- using Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0, TurboTax and MacInTax now offer the flexibility of a Web-enabled environment, without sacrificing any speed, convenience or productivity power. Intuit's extensive Web content and TurboTax work together as a cohesive team, enabling customers to move cleanly and easily back and forth between the program and the Web.
  • Quick Reference Link-- found within the EasyStep Interview process, this new feature ensures users get the most out of the extensive reference library in TurboTax Deluxe. The Quick Reference Link provides one-click access to the best source of information from any of the Deluxe resources (books, IRS publications, Common Tax Questions).
  • Online trial version-- this year new, free online trial version of TurboTax is available to provide taxpayers with an opportunity to evaluate the power of TurboTax at no cost. Taxpayers can test their personal tax waters using this online trial version, available on the Web at http://www.turbotax.com. Once users see how easy tax preparation can be, they can unlock the trial version of TurboTax for use in filing.
  • Multi-state CD-- new multi-state CD-ROM are now available to users who want the most complete way to reduce, prepare and file their state taxes. The CD guide state taxpayers quickly and easily through their state return using the State Assistant, the state-specific counterpart to Intuit's acclaimed EasyStep Interview. The State Assistant, the industry first state-specific interview-driven program for filing state returns, has been streamlined and made even easier for taxpayers.
  • Additional IRS forms-- forms 8839 adoption credit and 8853 medical savings account have been added, as well as contracts and straddles forms.

No Pains, Great Gains
For the vast majority of us, doing taxes is a time-consuming, often confusing and decidedly stressful process. Filing in 1997 will be even more difficult with so many changes made to the tax laws, and taxpayers want to understand these new laws to avoid paying more than is absolutely necessary. TurboTax and MacInTax users have access to a variety of expert tax advice included in the program to help them save money. Tax Advisors appear on-screen with useful advice about how to take advantage of new tax laws. Also, users simply need to click on help references from anywhere within the program, and they'll be taken to the exact area pertaining to where they are on their tax return. Money Magazine Income Tax Handbook by Mary Sprouse, tax accountant and former IRS auditor is available in TurboTax Deluxe, as well as Jeff Schnepper book How to Pay Zero Taxes, which is filled with dozens of tax-reducing strategies. Of course, Quick Reference Link is always on-call to guide users to the most appropriate information available from the Tax Library.

TurboTax and MacInTax Deluxe users can refer to the many tips and how-to videos included on these CD-ROMs. The video library is hosted by Mary Sprouse and Marshal Loeb, both of whom are widely recognized tax experts. Loeb, a former Managing Editor of Fortune and Money magazines, has won numerous awards in economic and financial journalism. TurboTax and MacInTax Deluxe also offer customers the most popular IRS publications, as well as these newly refined, popular features:

  • Streamlined EasyStep Interview-- Intuit has further streamlined the EasyStep Interview process, eliminating screens for more time-efficient preparation. Pioneered by Intuit, EasyStep Interview is the standard by which all other interview-driven programs are measured. Further enhancements have been made to personalize and customize this process to each taxpayer situation. The Interview is automatically customized for you based on age, personal W2 data, and more.
  • Forms Editing-- allows for simple changes to be made directly on the form view at the bottom of the EasyStep Interview, helping to speed the tax preparation process. Users can easily jump back and forth between EasyStep Interview and forms views.
  • TaxLink-- TurboTax is the only tax software that offers tight integration with Quicken and QuickBooks. With TaxLink, TurboTax users can review their Quicken or QuickBooks data and make changes before it is imported into their tax return. This integration between tax, accounting, and personal finance products offers significant time savings and helps give users better control over their finances. TurboTax and MacInTax users can also import data from other personal finance programs using the TXF format.
  • Final Review-- a TurboTax and MacInTax favorite, this invaluable feature checks the customer returns for missed deductions and areas which might trigger an audit and other errors, in addition to giving more personalized tax advice and tips for next year. Final Review also includes a "Check for Updates" feature that will check the TurboTax Web site and alert customers to any changes in the program which might affect their tax return. If a customer does not have access to the Internet, Intuit offers additional ways to gather this information: an 800# Voice Response Unit (800-685-7369), and an 800# Fax-Back information line (800-766-5034).

World Wide Web Integration
Intuit has invested heavily to bring the very best in cutting-edge Web technology to its customers. TurboTax and MacInTax ship with Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 and have the capability to use the Internet to enhance the tax preparation process with these features:

  • One-Click Updates-- users can take advantage of a new, timesaving update feature that checks with Intuit's Web site for TurboTax or MacInTax updates and allows the user to download and install any updates with a single click.
  • Online Support Solutions-- takes users directly to current, product specific, technical support information on the Intuit Web site.
  • Download States-- users can purchase and download state programs directly to their PC in a matter of minutes. These state programs are identical to those found on the multi-state CD-ROM and feature State Assistant technology to make preparing a state return fast and easy.

TurboTax Web Site
