TurboTax For The Web Goes Live; Signals Start Of Its 5th E-Tax Season
Leading online tax preparation and filing service delivers convenience and fast refunds to millions
SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Jan. 12, 2001 - If you're still using a pencil and paper to prepare your tax return, this is the year to join the millions of people who will prepare and file tax returns online using the Quicken© TurboTax© for the WebSM service (www.turbotax.com). From e-finance leader Intuit Inc. (NASDAQ: INTU), TurboTax for the Web is the leader in online tax preparation and filing and has the same award-winning features as Quicken TurboTax, the #1 best selling tax preparation software, from the easy-to-use interview to new features, including the Automated Tax Return. And this tax season, if you prepare and file your tax return early using TurboTax for the Web, you will save both time and money.

TurboTax for the Web is convenient -- consumers don't have to purchase or download software because they can prepare their return entirely online at any time from any computer with Internet access. Plus, there is absolutely no charge to try TurboTax for the Web. Taxpayers are charged only when they are ready to print or electronically file their tax return. Last year, 1.4 million federal and 900,000 state tax returns were filed using TurboTax for the Web.

TurboTax Delivers on Promise of Effortless Tax Preparation

This year, TurboTax is the only tax preparation solution to offer the Automated Tax Return feature. The Automated Tax Return delivers revolutionary simplicity and convenience by retrieving common tax information - wages, dividends, interest and stock transactions - from participating employers and financial institutions and automatically filling in the correct forms in TurboTax. This season, Intuit estimates that 15 to 20 million W-2s and 1099s will be available for import directly into the TurboTax product, saving time, increasing accuracy and eliminating the hassle and frustration of dealing with paper tax documents.

"TurboTax for the Web is far and away the most convenient and easiest online tax preparation solution. Our phenomenal growth last year is evidence that millions of ordinary people are embracing online tax preparation and have come to appreciate the convenience, speed and simplicity of doing taxes on the Internet," said Bob Meighan, vice president of Intuit's Consumer Tax Group. "And this year, we're introducing the Automated Tax Return and a host of other new features designed to make TurboTax Web-based tax preparation even easier, faster and hassle-free."

Tax Year 1999: A Banner Year
TurboTax for the Web was the clear favorite last year among online tax preparation sites, growing 470% over the prior year. About 60% of that growth came from people who made the leap from the time-consuming, error prone paper and pencil method. And while some competitors had performance and privacy issues, TurboTax for the Web performed exceptionally, easily scaling to accommodate more than 13,000 concurrent users and 97,000 tax returns on a single day.

Great Benefits for Early Birds And Tax Procrastinators

Whether consumers get a jump on their taxes or wait until the last minute, TurboTax for the Web is the fastest, most convenient way to prepare and file a tax return online. Taxpayers who file their federal return using TurboTax for the Web prior to April 1 get up to a 30% savings off the cost of preparing and filing that same return after April 1.

For taxpayers who wait until the last minute, TurboTax for the Web eliminates the worry about long lines and late night visits to the post office. Instead, taxpayers can use TurboTax for the Web - they don't have to go to the store or download any software - to prepare their return and then electronically file, without ever having to leave home or file any paper.

Taxpayers with simple returns can file Form 1040EZ (in about 15 minutes) using TurboTaxEZ for the Web, giving them a fast, streamlined way to prepare and file their tax return.

E-filing Helps Consumers Get Refunds Back Fast
Today marks the first day that taxpayers can electronically file federal tax returns with the Internal Revenue Service by using one of the commercially available tax preparation software programs or online tax services like TurboTax for the Web. Once a taxpayer has finished preparing their return with TurboTax for the Web, they can quickly and easily file their return electronically at no extra charge. By electronically filing their returns, taxpayers can receive refunds in as little as 10 days, compared to six weeks for returns filed by mail.

TurboTax for the Web supports all 44 states with income tax plus the District of Columbia. State programs are already available for California, Georgia, Maryland, Michigan, New York, Pennsylvania and Virginia. Remaining states will become available over the next several weeks. TurboTax for Web customers can also file their state tax returns electronically with 38 states and the District of Columbia.

The Most Popular Tax Preparation Solution on the Web
This year, approximately 800 leading financial institutions, electronic retailers and Internet-related service Web sites will make TurboTax for the Web accessible to millions of consumers. TurboTax has become the preferred tax solution on the Web, providing not only it's online, award-winning tax preparation and filing service, but a wealth of online tax information, tools and resources for industry leaders including Fidelity.com, Schwab.com and The New York Times. Many financial institutions including Fidelity Investments, The Vanguard Group, INVESCO Funds and WingspanBank.com are offering TurboTax for the Web for free to their customers, leveraging this valuable service to expand their online service offerings.

TurboTax for the Web is FREE to 56 Million American Taxpayers
All of the power and functionality of TurboTax for the Web, including the Automated Tax Return, are available for free to the more than 56 million U.S. taxpayers that have adjusted gross income of $25,000 or less. This free service is offered through the Quicken Tax Freedom Project, Intuit's philanthropic initiative that donates online tax preparation and electronic filing. This year, Intuit is expanding the Quicken Tax Freedom Project by raising the income eligibility by $5,000 over last year's cap. Eligibility is determined by users' actual tax information as entered into TurboTax for the Web. The free program applies to the preparation and electronic filing of both state and federal individual income tax returns and is accessible from http://turbotax.intuit.com/taxfreedom.

This press release includes "forward-looking" statements about the prospects for Intuit's tax business. For example, statements in the future tense, and statements such as we "expect," we "anticipate" we "plan" or we "believe" are forward-looking statements. Investors should be aware that actual results might differ materially from our expressed expectations because of risks and uncertainties about the future. Intuit will not necessarily update the information in this press release if any forward-looking statement later turns out to be inaccurate. Risks and uncertainties affecting Intuit's tax business include the following: Our revenue and earnings are highly seasonal, particularly for our tax business, and our quarterly and annual financial results fluctuate significantly. Returns for desktop software can be significant, and could exceed the revenue reserves we have established for them. Our web-based tax preparation and electronic filing services are expected to face extremely heavy customer demand during the peak tax season. We must maintain high reliability for web-based tax preparation and electronic filing in order to continue expanding these businesses. If we fail to provide responsive customer service and technical support, we could lose customers. The expansion of the availability of the ATR feature requires the participation of third parties including payroll companies and financial institutions. Additional information about factors that could affect future results and events is included in Intuit's fiscal 1999 Form 10-K and subsequent reports filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
