Along with keys to their new dwellings, several homeowners will also receive 21st century housewarming gifts: Compaq Presario computers with Quicken® personal financial software. The gifts come from technology partners Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE: CPQ) and Intuit Inc. (NASDAQ: INTU), who together, are donating $40,000 in cash, computers, software, technology assistance and financial training to the Peninsula Habitat for Humanity project, which will welcome its latest residents with a ceremony planned for Saturday, June 30 at 4 p.m.
Ten Compaq Presario 5000 series desktop computers loaded with select Quicken products and other software, Compaq monitors and Compaq Inkjet printers will be presented to the new Habitat households at the Rolison Road Townhouses. Intuit employees will also donate their time to visit the recipients' homes, set up the computers and train the families on basic financial management and computer use. The residences are part of a 36-unit affordable housing community whose first phase was begun a year ago. Intuit and Compaq enlisted the support of their employees in the Silicon Valley to help build the houses. Three teams of volunteers dedicated 200 hours of service over three days.
"Habitat does a great job of putting these families on the road to financial freedom," said Laura Castaneda, group manager of corporate giving at Intuit, "We want to help them with the second step by providing them with financial management knowledge."
Habitat for Humanity provided the development, construction and financing for the homes through donations, volunteers and corporate sponsors, such as Intuit and Compaq. Habitat houses are sold at cost to families and financed through affordable, no-interest loans. The project has erected more than 100,000 homes worldwide.
Compaq and Intuit joined forces to provide economic empowerment and modern technology to the families moving into their new homes. Last March, the two companies announced a two-year, $60 million agreement naming Compaq as the preferred technology provider for Intuit's information technology needs. The deal included a substantial commitment by Compaq to advertise on leading Intuit Web properties and bundle select Quicken products on its personal computers.
