Title Turning the background downloading manager on or off in Quicken
KB ID#: 1935
Categories: Online/Internet Setup
Question: How do I turn the background downloading manager on or off in Quicken?

Answer:

Background downloading into the Quicken program is controlled by the Quicken Download Manager (also known as Qagent). When the Quicken program is installed, the Quicken Download Manager is automatically enabled. Background downloading can be disabled temporarily (for one session only), or permanently (all sessions until actively re-enabled).

To disable Quicken Download Manager permanently:

Note: This will disable background downloading for all sessions until the Quicken Download Manager is specifically re-enabled.

  1. Right-click the Globe icon in the Status area of the Microsoft® Windows® toolbar (where the system clock appears). This will open the Quicken Download Manager menu.
  2. Choose Close Quicken Download Manager from the menu. This will disable background downloading into the Quicken program until the computer is restarted.

To disable Quicken Download Manager permanently:

Note: This will disable background downloading for all sessions until the Quicken Download Manager is specifically re-enabled.

  1. From the Quicken Edit menu, choose Options, and then choose Internet Options.
  2. Click the Connection tab, and then select the Don't Use Background Downloading Option checkbox.
  3. Click OK.
  4. Close Quicken, and then restart the computer.

To enable Quicken Download Manager when it has been permanently disabled:

Note: This will enable background downloading for all sessions until the Quicken Download Manager is specifically disabled.

  1. From the Quicken Edit menu, choose Options, and then choose Internet Options.
  2. Click the Connection tab, and then select the Enable For Shorter, Faster Internet Sessions checkbox.
  3. Click OK.
  4. Close Quicken, and then restart the computer.
  5. Check the Status area of the Windows toolbar to make sure the red Q icon now appears.

For more information about background downloading in the Quicken program, see Quicken Download Manager.

If there are suspected conflicts between the background downloading driver, another device driver, and/or some software on your system, you may choose to disable the driver.

To disable Quicken's Background Downloading driver:

  1. From the Quicken Edit menu, choose Options, and then choose Internet Options.
  2. With the Internet Options window open, press Alt+Shift+4.
  3. Click Yes when asked if you want to disable the Quicken Background Download Manager driver.
  4. Click OK at the Connection Options window.
  5. Close Quicken, and then restart your computer.

Note: You must be in Release 3 or later of Quicken 2000 to disable the Background Downloading driver.
