Title Messages occur when starting Quicken, connecting to the Internet, or restarting the computer
KB ID#: 6173
Categories: Online/Internet Setup
Question: Why do I receive various messages when starting Quicken, connecting to the Internet, or restarting my computer?
  1. mrtRate.dll
  2. mrtRate.vxd
  3. Mrtproc.dll
  4. Qagent.exe

Possible
Cause:

These messages will occur when the Quicken Background Downloading driver conflicts with existing system drivers and ports, or other programs that are installed on your computer.

Common causes of these messages are:

  • Illegal operation and invalid page fault messages regarding mrtRate.dll, mrtRate.vxd, Mrtproc.dll, or QAgent files, including olemainthreadwndname messages that are reported by Norton® CrashGuard.

  • The modem attempts to dial when starting the computer.

  • You are unable to print after going online.

  • The printer is activated when going online.

  • The computer stops responding when attempting to go online.

Answer:

To resolve these issues, determine what the conflict is through a process of elimination, and then update the driver for the device or disable Quicken's Background Downloading driver.

Note: When the Background Downloading driver is disabled, the Quicken program will not download any update information during the idle time periods of your Internet connection. Also, if you have QuickBooks installed on your system, you will not have access to all update functions.

To disable Quicken's Background Downloading driver:

  1. From the Quicken Edit menu, choose Options, and then choose Internet Options.
  2. With the Internet Options window open, press Alt+Shift+4.
  3. Click Yes when asked if you want to disable the Quicken Background Download Manager driver.
  4. Click OK at the Connection Options window.
  5. Close Quicken, and then restart your computer.

If the above steps do not resolve the issue, more information can be found on Microsoft's support Web site. Search for knowledge base article # 810905.
