Title Messages about device driver preventing standby mode on Com1 or Com2 ports
KB ID#: 7221
Categories: Windows/System Related
Question: Why do I receive one of the following messages when my Windows NT-based computer (Microsoft® Windows NT®, Microsoft® Windows® 2000, and Microsoft® Windows XP) attempts to go into standby mode (also called hibernate, sleep, or suspend mode)?
  • Device driver for the communication port Com1 device is preventing the machine from entering standby.
  • The device driver for Com1 is preventing the system from entering hibernation.
  • The device driver for Com2 is preventing the system from entering hibernation.
  • The device driver for the [XXXXXX] modem device is preventing the machine from entering standby. Please close all applications and try again. If you are still facing problems, please update this driver.

Possible
Cause:

Power Management options, such as system standby, reduce the power consumption of any number of your computer devices or of your entire system.

The mrtRate driver may be preventing your computer from using these options. This driver, which is installed with an earlier version of Quicken, remains on your system if you chose not to remove shared files when uninstalling that version of Quicken.

Some examples of commands that may not be responding are:

  • Sleep
  • Hibernate
  • Standby
  • Suspend

With earlier versions of Quicken, these messages may also be caused by another file installed with Quicken. Qagent.exe, the Background Download Manager, will occasionally check for an idle Internet connection (a connection to the Internet is open but not in use) in order to download Quicken data.

This is done in an effort to save you time during online sessions in Quicken. On some operating systems, certain installed drivers (modem, printer, and so on) may encounter problems when performing this function and stop responding to some, but not all, system commands.

To resolve these messages:

Note: These steps apply to Microsoft® Windows® 2000 and may vary for other versions of Windows. Please refer to the Windows Help index for specific instructions for your version.

  1. Right-click My Computer on your Windows desktop, and then select Properties.

  2. On the Hardware tab, click Device Manager.

  3. From the Device Driver View menu, choose Show hidden devices.

  4. Click the plus sign (+) next to Non-Plug and Play Drivers to expand the listing, and then locate the mrtRate driver.

  5. Right-click mrtRate, and then select Properties.

  6. Click the Driver tab, and then click Stop under Current Status.

  7. Under Startup, in the Type box, click to select Disabled, and then click OK.

  8. Close the Device Manager window.

If the previous solution does not resolve the messages and you have your prior version of Quicken:

  1. Uninstall the version of Quicken on your computer.

  2. Reinstall your prior version of Quicken.

  3. Uninstall your prior version of Quicken. Answer Yes to All when asked if shared files should be removed.

  4. Reinstall your current version of Quicken.
