What's new in the latest release of Quicken 98 for Macintosh?

Release 5 (R5)

Update R5 incorporates all program changes made in both R2 and R3. The major change R5 makes is enabling online payment functions after September 5, 1999.

Release 3 (R3)

Update R3 incorporates all program changes made in Release 2 (R2) plus several new changes. There is no Release 4 (R4) update, although some customers may have an R4 version of Quicken 98 for Macintosh. Other customers may also have an OEM R3 version. Specific changes added through the R3 update include:

MacInTax Importing Functions

Quicken users can export tax-related data into MacInTax by using either the Tax Schedule Report or the Capital Gains Report, and selecting the Export Report... TXF option. This version of Quicken 98 will allow TXF files to be imported into MacInTax without error messages.

Online Banking Functions

Quicken 98 now handles Online Banking transactions that have check numbers with more than five digits. A warning is now given that checkmarks entered in the upper window of the Download Transactions screen will need to be reentered if the user sorts the transactions.

Online banking features have improved support for year 2000 dates and beyond.

QuickEntry Functions

QuickEntry now does not dismiss some Quicken data files as damaged when they are valid.

Release 3 includes these changes that were also included in the R2 update:

QuickFill and memorized transaction lists

Users with large memorized transactions and QuickFill lists may have noted that information recorded in these areas was damaged during the conversion process to Quicken 98. This release of Quicken 98 will now convert data files without damage. If you currently are using Quicken 98 and have a damaged memorized transactions or QuickFill list, you will have to re-convert from your original data file.

Online Banking Financial Institution window

There are two new buttons in Financial Institution window:

  • Update List button: The name has been changed to the "Update" button which updates the Financial Institution window with the financial institution's name, home URL, and customer service number.
  • Update Item button: This new button updates the selected Financial Institution only. If a user has completed a successful online transaction for that Financial Institution, this button will also download the Financial Institution's updated logo (if there is one available).

Online Banking Error messages

Secured Socket Layer (SSL) errors: 1604, 1611, and 1620 occur when a secure connection can not be established with the server. A secure connection may not occur when the server is busy handling other requests. If you experience any of these errors, please try connecting again at a later time.

Investors- Return of Capital for partial sale lots

It has been brought to our attention that Quicken 98 does not properly attribute the effect of a return of capital on a partially liquidated lot. If you receive a return of capital after having sold a portion of a position, you should apply the entire amount of the return of capital to the cost basis of your remaining position. Quicken instead applies only a portion of the total return of capital to the cost basis of the remaining position. The amount applied is equal to the total return of capital times the fraction of the original lot that the remaining position represents.

Quicken Quotes

If high/low volume detail is important to you and you use Quicken Quotes to download security prices via the Internet, we recommend you download prior to midnight Eastern time.

After midnight Eastern time, the Quicken Quotes server prepares for the next trading day by advancing the date and resetting daily high/low volume information to zero. If you download quotes into Quicken using Quicken Quotes via the Internet after midnight Eastern time and before the next trading resumes, your quotes data will incorrectly display the next trading date and the last closing price of the security.

As an alternative, Quicken.com includes the capability to track your portfolio online. While this method does not allow you to export data into Quicken 98, it does provide access to additional information you may find valuable, such as news stories related to the securities you follow, up-to-date stock charting, access to chat groups on securities, and more. To access these capabilities, you can click on the Mac Web icon in both Quicken Basic 98 and Quicken Deluxe 98, or on the Investments icon in Quicken Deluxe 98.

This problem will not occur if Quicken Quotes are downloaded using CompuServe.
