A previous version of Quicken is not needed to install Quicken 2005

Although the latest version of Quicken is loosely referred to as an "upgrade," Quicken has always been sold as a full, stand-alone product. In this context, the word "upgrade" is intended to highlight new features and enhancements not found in previous versions of Quicken.

In contrast to upgrades, updates (also referred to as releases or "patches") are product revisions which can be downloaded free of charge. Updates improve program functionality and fix known "bugs." Changes to the program after installing an update are usually invisible to the user, as updates do not add new features.
