The most recent downloadable program update for Quicken 98 for
Macintosh is R5. To check your release, select About Quicken from the
Apple menu, and press R on the keyboard. If it does not
say R5, upgrade to the latest release by downloading the appropriate
updater file shown below.
Note: For specific details about each release of
Quicken 98 for Macintosh, see what's new by selecting Latest
release.
How to Upgrade to Release 5
- Make sure the Quicken 98 for Macintosh program is installed on the
computer you are using.
- Determine the release of the currently installed Quicken 98 for
Macintosh program. To do this:
- Start the Quicken program.
- Select About Quicken from the Apple menu while pressing
R
on the keyboard. This will open the Environment Display window,
which will show the Quicken program release.
- Record the following information from the Environment Display
window:
- Quicken Version - shows release
- Machine Type - shows processor type
- You will need to know the processor type and currently installed
release of the Quicken program in order to download the correct
updater file.
- Depending on the Quicken program version you are using, choose the
correct updater file from the following two charts. Click the correct
updater file to begin the download process.
- When you are prompted for a location to save the file, specify your
Macintosh desktop. The download process will automatically expand the
files and place them in a new folder on your Macintosh desktop. Some
older browsers may not support the automatic file expansion. If the
files do not automatically, double-click the icon placed on the
desktop, and it will self-extract.
- After saving the appropriate updater files to the computer desktop,
update the program using the following procedure:
- Restart the Macintosh with extensions off. If you need help doing
this, see Restart
without extensions.
- Double-click the Quicken updater. The updater displays a window
in which you can navigate through the Quicken folder to locate the
program to be updated.
- Locate and select the correct program file to be updated; then
click Update.
- Quicken displays a progress bar showing the time elapsed. When
the updater is finished, Quicken displays a message stating that
the update was successful.
Quicken Deluxe 98 R1 & R2 releases only
If you installed Quicken Deluxe 98 using Easy Install, you have all the
Quicken Deluxe features on your Macintosh and will need to use the Quicken
Deluxe Updater plus all four of the Deluxe feature program file updaters
(Emergency Records Organizer Updater, Free Credit Report Updater,
Financial Fitness98 Updater, and QuickEntry Updater).
Note: If you have already upgraded to R2, run only
the following two updaters:
- Quicken updater
- QuickEntry updater
Before you can update any of these four Deluxe features, you must first
replace each features individual program file on your hard drive with a
copy from the CD-ROM that you received when you purchased Quicken. This is
done because every time you use Quicken it writes certain information to
these files, and you need to make update changes to a copy that has not
been used. Insert the CD-ROM in your CD drive. Click on the CD-ROM desktop
icon, then one by one select and copy each of these files in the Quicken
Deluxe 98 folder and the Quicken Essentials folder on the CD-ROM to
replace the same file in the equivalent location on your Macintosh hard
drive.
The following list identifies the location of the program files on the
both hard drive and the CD-ROM:
- The QuickEntry program file is located in the Quicken 98 (Deluxe or
Basic) folder.
- The Emergency Records Organizer program file is located in the
Quicken Essentials folder.
- The Free Credit Report program file is located in the Quicken
Essentials folder.
- The Financial Fitness 98 program file is located in the Quicken
Essentials folder.
If you used Custom Install to install only selected Deluxe features,
you need to use only the Quicken Deluxe Updater plus the updaters for
those Deluxe features you actually installed.
Troubleshooting
If the update was not successful, you may have tried to update a Power
Macintosh application (PPC) with a 68K updater, or vice versa. Try
downloading the updater again and make sure you have selected the correct
one.
Replacing your tax.scd file
This updater also contains the new tax.scd file, which has updated tax
information.
After you have run the updater for the Quicken 98 program file and any
necessary Deluxe feature program files, replace the tax.scd file in your
Quicken Essentials folder with the new one that has been downloaded.
Restarting Quicken and registering
Restart your Macintosh by choosing Restart from the Special menu. Open
Quicken again.
When you open Quicken, Quicken asks you to register the product if you
have not already done so. It is strongly recommend
that you register Quicken, so you can receive
timely news of updates and other important product
information. If you choose to register at a later
time, you can choose Register Software from the
Online menu, or see How
do I register?
Error Messages
If you receive an error message when installing
the Quicken R5 program release that reads Sorry,
a -44 error occurred or Could not finish
the update because the disk is full, see Update
Errors.
