Free update available for your Quicken 2004 software
Quicken 2004 Release 5 Update, February 2004
This free update provides you with the latest enhancements
to your Quicken software. Changes have been made to the Tax
Rates, Investment Reports, Investment Forms, the Register
and Reports, and online banking. This release contains the
following enhancements and improvements as well as including
those from all prior maintenance releases:
Before You Update
If you use online account services to download transactions
into Quicken or to pay bills online from within Quicken, please
make sure to complete all your online sessions before you
update.
To check that all previous online sessions have been completed
we recommend you perform the following steps:
- From the Online Center, click Update/Send.
If your last online session was not completed, you'll see
the following error message: "Your last online session
was not completed. Quicken will now try to complete this
previous connection. After it is done, you can send your
new request."
- Click OK to complete your previous connection.
Once the connection has completed, you can proceed with
your Quicken update.
R5 Release Notes
TAXES
- Updated Quicken to reflect changes in tax exemption amount.
PREFERENCES
- Resolved a problem with the ability to open data files
when the "Calendar and currency" preference setting
has been changed.
SCHEDULED TRANSACTIONS
- Resolved a problem with the ability to open data files
where the file is processing an estimated tax schedule.
Changes made in prior release (R4)
This release contains the following enhancements and improvements:
Taxes
- Updated Quicken to reflect changes in tax laws and rates.
Investment Performance Report
- Fixed a problem where NA showed as the Average
Annual Return value for all date ranges when subtotaling
by security.
- Fixed a problem where banking transactions would not be
counted in the Average Annual Return calculation.
Investment Forms
- Added a field to the Reinvest Income entry form to allow
the entry of fees associated with Dividend Reinvestment
programs.
- Fixed an issue where specified lots were not being maintained
when selling ESPP shares.
Register/Calculator
- The calculator now maintains decimal places when editing
transactions.
Reports
- Voided checks will no longer appear on the Missing Checks
report.

Changes made in prior release (R3)
Home Page / Net Worth Snapshot
Eliminated potential crash when customizing the Net Worth
snapshot on the Quicken Home Page to show large date ranges.
This resulted in errors such as: "The instruction at
[memory address] referenced memory at [memory address].
The memory could not be read, Memory could not be written,
and an error occurred during the last task."
Backing Up Data Files
- The message "There is a file with the same name in
the directory or disk. Do you want to overwrite it?"
will no longer display after "Don't show this message
again" has been selected.
- Resolved the ability to recognize a CD-R or CD-RW drive
on Windows XP machines.
Data Files with Long Names
Resolved a problem with the ability to open data files
on NTFS partitions where the file path exceeds 128 characters.
This sometimes resulted in an error "Can't open file"
when converting to the current version of Quicken.
Register Calculator
- The calculator in the register will now calculate correctly
when the first number entered contains 3 or more decimal
places.
- Sorting options in the Register will now persist after
closing and re-launching Quicken.
Performance
- Resolved slow and/or faltering performance when typing
into the register.
- Eliminated the situation where Windows XP machines could
not enter hibernate or standby mode because the Quicken
Background Download Manager from a prior version of Quicken
was not uninstalled or had been disabled.
Installing Quicken
Resolved the ability to install Quicken when certain files
are missing.
- This includes eliminating the error message "A
required .dll file, OLEACC.dll was not found."
- This also includes resolving the error message "Quicken
is unable to find one or more essential files. You must
uninstall Quicken then install Quicken again to continue."
Converting Data Files
Resolved the ability to open and convert data files that
have duplicate tax profile records. This resulted in an
error "Can't open file" when converting to the
current version of Quicken.
Online Banking
- Modified the text of the "How do you want to setup
your account?" dialog during Account Setup for Web
Connect financial institutions to provide clearer instructions
on how to proceed.
- Eliminated a situation where the sign was incorrect for
check and debit transactions downloaded into investing accounts.
- Added additional information to the message OL-393 that
occurs during certain online banking sessions to display
additional detail and next steps. The new text of the message
is: "Quicken was not able to bring all of your online
transaction information up to date for account [account
name]. The server may be currently unavailable or your account
information may not be correct. You can review account information
by right-clicking the account name in the Account Bar list
and choosing Edit Account; then compare the information
in Quicken with that provided by your financial institution
and make any necessary changes. Please try again later.
If the problem continues, call [financial institution name]
at [financial institution's contact information].
