Kansas Department of Revenue - New Withholding Allowance Certificate Form K-4

Background:

Kansas Department of Revenue (DOR) will discontinue use of Federal Form W-4 for figuring Kansas withholding tax and has implemented a new withholding allowance certificate, Form K-4.  The Form K-4 is required for any employee hired after December 31, 2007, or any existing employee changing their withholding status or allowances after December 31, 2007.  Use of the Form K-4 is optional for existing or newly hired employees prior to January 1, 2008.  Kansas DOR has not changed the statuses currently listed in the withholding tax tables due to the fact that Form K-4 is being “phased in”, beginning January 1, 2008.  Form can be found at http://www.ksrevenue.org/pdf/forms/k-4.pdf.

The status ( Kansas uses “Allowance Rate”, see line 3 of Form K-4) selections on Form K-4 are:

Ø       Single (selection for single filer or married person with a working spouse)

Ø      Joint (selection for married person whose spouse does not work)
